At the tender age of 17, Carl (Mousey) was off to war on the USS Bunker Hill. He was at the testing of the Atomic Bomb at the Bikini Atoll island, where he told of being on deck when the bomb was exploded and being able to see the skeleton of the man in front of him, the light being so intense. In that time, the only shield from the radiation that the Navy offered was the advice to "cover your eyes..." Two bombs, similar to that tested before my father's eyes, were to later kill hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians, and in my opinion, contribute to the illnesses and deaths of many veterans (including my father, who died of Leukemia (it is thought) with no history of it in the family.
